Bring me two piña coladas

Everyone refers to the chemotherapy drugs as “cocktails,” since they are mixed to order for you the day of your treatment. But one of the things they tell you as part of the chemo education is to avoid alcohol. Talk about bait and switch.

I’m not saying that the infusion clinic is a party room. It’s not. Serious healing goes on in that room. But everyone has their own TV and their own easy chair. This morning they had chocolate chip cookies. Heck. It’s football season. Give Shannon a Red Bud Light with olives and it’s like a Sunday afternoon at the VandeVenter household. Without the IV bags and nurses, of course.

My girl’s a real trooper. The nausea started to get to her some tonight and have never been through this, it’s hard to tell what’s normal or what’s a side effect we need to worry about. But she has good medicine to help, and a great support team here. We have our list of numbers to call with questions and know what signs to look for if we need to go to the hospital. Her oncologist is on call this weekend, so that helps.

We’re just going to take things one day at a time.

  1. I just wanted to say thank you…thank you for sharing, thank you for letting us into your lives like this. Thank you for being everything Shannon deserves in a husband and thank you for being strong and standing by her through this. You both inspire me so much.
